Astronauts
Colonel Buzz Aldrin (b.1930) graduated from West Point third in his class, flew 66 combat missions in F-86's while on duty in Korea, and shot down 2 enemy MIGs. He was commander of the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB. He earned a doctorate in orbital rendezvous from MIT in 1963, and can figure rendezvous procedures in his head, a valuable skill.
On July 20,1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstong landed their Lunar Module on the moon's Sea of Tranquility and became the first humans to walk on the moon. On a prior flight, in November 1966, Buzz and mission commander James Lovell were launched in Gemini 12, which brought the Gemini program to a successful close. Aldrin spent 5 1/2 hours on a groundbreaking EVA outside the spacecraft.
